Ozone is highly effective against pollutants and bacteria that other methods struggle to address. For instance, Cryptosporidium parvum, resistant to most chemical disinfectants, is swiftly destroyed by ozone. Unlike UV, which merely disrupts the reproductive cycle of microorganisms, or microfiltration, which removes essential minerals, ozone ensures comprehensive treatment without compromising water quality.

Ozone's use as a flocculant significantly improves microflocculation of raw water, resulting in better flow rates, reduced filtration size, and lower chemical costs. As a disinfectant, ozone's higher oxidation potential compared to chlorine allows for reduced contact times and smaller treatment footprints, saving space and construction costs. Additionally, ozone excels at breaking down refractory compounds, enhancing COD removal, and extending the lifespan of granular activated carbon (GAC).
By replacing or reducing the need for chlorine, chloramines, or chlorine dioxide, ozone prevents the formation of harmful byproducts like trihalomethanes (THMs). Recent technological advances have made ozone systems significantly more affordable, with both capital and operational costs reduced by over half in recent years.
